My Heart: On Launching and Letting Go
I’m writing this week’s note from 30,000 feet, somewhere between London, England and home – with my heart feeling both full and a bit tender. We just spent a week helping our son settle into his new home in London, where he’ll begin his next chapter, working there permanently. While he’s been living independently for the past two years, this move feels different – further, more permanent.
Part of me is so excited for the adventure that lies ahead for him. But the mama in me, can’t help but feel the sadness of him being so far away. And then I remember: I did something similar at his age. Maybe not as far, but far enough to know my own parents must have felt this same mixture of pride and ache.
It brings to mind Kahlil Gibran’s beautiful words:
“Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.”
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.”
So this Wellness Journal has a different tone today – one of reflection and letting go. I remind myself that this is part of the journey: celebrating as our loved ones step into their own lives, even when it takes them far from ours.
As parents, we’re not empty nesters; we are in fact bird launchers – guiding them to soar while keeping the nest soft and open, ready if or whenever needed.
Thank you for being part of this journey with me. I’m more grateful than ever to have this work to channel my energy into.
Remember to slow down, breathe, and trust that you are spiritually wired for your dreams – they’re already waiting for you.
