Time to Unplug – 3 Ways to Set Technology Boundaries
When it comes to slowing down and finding moments of peace, one obvious solution stands out – unplugging from your phone. Our smartphones have undeniably transformed the way we live. I recently experienced this firsthand during a cottage trip, where limited data and no Wi-Fi allowed me to disconnect completely. It felt so good once I got over the initial resistance.
Back in the day, we used to wait patiently in various places, occasionally flipping through magazines, but mostly just being present with our thoughts. We had endless opportunities to just simply be. Today this is often referred to as being bored. Sadly, the era of smartphones and social media has taken away these moments of simplicity for many of us.
We didn’t need meditation in the past like we do now for this exact reason. Our minds need to simply be without the constant stimulation. Our meditation practice gives us the pause that we no longer get in the hustle and bustle of our daily lives. Slowing down means giving your entire being an opportunity to chill and relax.
The truth is – the only way to unplug is to be very intentional with your use of technology. Here are 3 ways to help you create those much-needed tech boundaries:
1. Create Tech-Free Zones: Designate certain areas in your home or workspace as tech-free zones. For example, make your bedroom a phone-free sanctuary to ensure a peaceful and restful sleep. You can also establish tech-free zones in communal areas to encourage more face-to-face interactions and meaningful conversations.
2. Set Specific Unplugged Times: Intentionally schedule periods of unplugged time during your day. It could be during meals, in the morning when you wake up, or an hour before bedtime. Use this time to engage in activities that nourish your soul, such as reading a book, going for a walk in nature, or practicing mindfulness exercises.
3. Use Your Phone to Help You Unplug: Sounds like a paradox but this has been incredibly helpful for me. You can set limits on your screen time (social media) directly in your settings. You’ll receive a notification on your phone when you’ve reached your time limit.
