What if legacy isn’t something you leave behind?

A sentence stopped me in my tracks this week. I was out walking, listening to a recent podcast episode with Oprah and Jay Shetty, when Oprah said:

“Your legacy is every life you touch.”

I stopped and wrote it down. Because I think about purpose a lot. It fascinates me. But legacy? That word has always felt a little bigger and more elusive.

Maybe because we tend to think of legacy as something we leave behind. The money. The children. The work. The contribution. The thing people will remember us for someday.

But what if your legacy isn’t something you leave?
What if you’re creating it every day?

In the conversation you have with someone. The encouragement you give. The person you believe in before they fully believe in themselves. Even the stranger you smile at without ever knowing the ripple effect it creates in their day.

It immediately made me think of our son’s Grade 7 history teacher, Mr. MacDonald.

Our son had some wonderful teachers, but Mr. MacDonald was different. He saw something in him and challenged him to show up in a way no one had before. Our son walked into Grade 7 with one idea of who he was and walked out seeing himself differently.

And that stayed with him.

Mr. MacDonald had such an impact that we stayed in touch and attended his retirement party a few years later. Sadly, he passed away not long after retiring.

I hope he knew the legacy he left.
But I wonder if he ever really knew.

Did he know that all these years later, we would still talk about him? Did he know how one year in his classroom changed the way a young boy saw himself? Did he know how many other students probably carried a piece of what he gave them forward?

That’s the thing about a ripple.
We rarely get to see how far it travels.

And maybe that’s why this definition of legacy moved me so much.

It makes legacy less about what we accomplish and more about how we live. Less about being remembered by many and more about how deeply we touch the people right in front of us.

And just maybe purpose isn’t always something we need to figure out. Maybe some of it is already happening.

This connects so beautifully to this week’s Spiritually Wired episode – Soul Lesson vs. Soul Purpose: What’s the Difference? I explore whether our soul lessons and our purpose are really separate at all – or whether one is continually shaping and informing the other.

Because what I’ve come to know at a deep level is this: the things we move through become part of our purpose. And what we learn, heal and become through them creates ripples far beyond us.

Remember to breathe, and trust that you are spiritually wired for your dreams – they’re already waiting for you.

Sending much love your way.
