Lessons from the Story of the Golden Buddha

Have you ever heard the story of the Golden Buddha? Here’s the essence of this powerful and inspiring lesson:

In the 1950s, a monastery in Bangkok was being relocated to make room for a new building. During this process, a massive clay Buddha statue was being moved by a crane. However, as the statue was being lifted, it began to crack because of the weight and size. The monks, concerned about damaging the statue, decided to lower it back to the ground and cover it with a large tarp.

One night, a monk decided to meditate near the covered statue. As he sat in contemplation, he noticed a small piece of the clay had chipped off, revealing a glimmer of gold underneath. Curious, the monks investigated further and discovered that the clay was actually covering a solid gold statue of Buddha underneath.

Historical records suggest that several hundred years prior, during times of war and invasion, the Burmese army was approaching Thailand. To protect the precious golden statue, the monks had covered it with clay to conceal its true value and preserve it from being looted or destroyed.

The discovery of the Golden Buddha became a symbol of wisdom, resilience, and the idea that true value and beauty can often be concealed beneath layers of imperfection or disguise. It has since become a revered icon in Thailand, representing the inherent richness and potential within every individual, waiting to be uncovered and realized.

I love this story as a reminder of the power and light that lives within each of us, even when we can’t see it for ourselves.

YOU are a golden buddha. Full of light and infinite potential.
