What Would Dolly Do?

What would Dolly do?

I’ve always loved Dolly Parton. But I’ve appreciated her even more as I’ve gotten older. Beyond the music, rhinestones, hair and humour, there was such incredible wisdom to her. She had a generosity of spirit, creative genius and most of all, she knew exactly who she was and stayed true to herself.

I mean, how can you not dance to 9 to 5, sing along to Islands in the Stream, open your heart to Coat of Many Colors and appreciate the lyrics of I Will Always Love You?

One of my favourite Dolly stories is actually about that last song. Elvis Presley wanted to record I Will Always Love You, but the deal asked Dolly to give up half of her publishing rights to the song. She said no… and later shared that she cried all night afterward.

That part of the story is important because we often think that trusting our intuition means feeling good afterward. But that’s not always how it works. Sometimes knowing your worth means walking away from something you really want. Sometimes the right decision still makes you sad.

Dolly didn’t cry because she regretted her decision. She cried because she really wanted Elvis to sing her song. And of course, years later Whitney Houston recorded it and we all know what happened from there. But she didn’t know any of that when she said no. She simply knew what was true for her in that moment and she followed it.

And that’s what I’ve come to admire most about her. She knew who she was. She knew her worth. She trusted herself. She was kind, funny, generous and deeply spiritual, while somehow never taking herself too seriously.

So that’s why I think this is a good question to ask ourselves – What would Dolly do?

And there’s something about that question that feels especially fitting as we move into September and start thinking about our goals again.

It’s the energy we’re bringing to our Setting Goals with Soul session. It’s not about creating another list of things to do. It’s about slowing down, connecting within and looking at our goals through the lens of identity and intention.

And if you want to go a little deeper into this conversation around becoming, manifestation and what it means to live as the fullest expression of yourself, this week’s Spiritually Wired podcast is a little different.

I’m resharing a conversation I had with my dear friend Brenda Jasmin on the She Flourishes Podcast. We talk about my chapter in My Manifested Life, the experiences that have shaped me on my spiritual journey and what living a manifested life means to me now.

Because ultimately, it’s about becoming more fully ourselves – not who we think we should be. And Dolly certainly knew a thing or two about that.

I can already picture her in heaven with the biggest, fluffiest wings – covered in rhinestones and diamonds. Thank you for showing us the way. 🤍

Remember to breathe, and trust that you are spiritually wired for your dreams – they’re already waiting for you.

Sending much love your way.
